Boyle Heights - First Street Beautification Proposal

Project Date: 2005

Lead by Project Restore, a nonprofit group originally created to renovate City Hall, a conglomerate of architects, municipal leaders and community leaders produced 1st Now, a 78-page plan to renovate a two mile stretch of First Street from the Disney Concert Hall in Downtown to Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights. The proposal calls for the creation of a pedestrian friendly corridor linking Downtown and Boyle Heights with the use of landscaping, lighting and urban street furniture. The proposal incorporates ongoing and planned improvements already happening along the corridor including the $1.8 billion Grand Avenue plan and the $900 million extension of the MTA Metro Gold Line to East Los Angeles.

The Urban Simulation Team was asked by the office of the Chief Legislative Analyst of the City of Los Angeles to create a model of both the existing conditions along First Street and of the conditions set forth by the 1st Now proposal. Running on a loop, the finished model was displayed on large screens for a gala marking the completion of the year long collaborative effort.
