The University of California, Santa Barbara is currently involved in an ambitious campus-wide master-planning process. According to campus promotional materials, ground has already been broken for new buildings for engineering and the sciences, marine sciences, life sciences, and intercollegiate athletics, all to be completed in 2004. Additionally, several new buildings are to be completed or under construction by 2007. Marc Fisher, associate vice chancellor for campus design and facilities, commissioned the Urban Simulation Team at UCLA to assist in this effort.

To date, the team has modeled the new San Clemente housing complex, student resources building, west Pardall parking structure, and the re-design of the east campus entrance. The team has also completed work on the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) building and parking structure, a joint venture of UCSB and UCLA on the UCSB campus which will “facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to develop the information, biomedical, and manufacturing technologies that will dominate science and the economy in the 21st century” (www.cnsi.ucla.edu).
